Design/Development – Petoholics Anonymous Because you can never have too many pets Sat, 16 Nov 2013 15:57:05 +0000 en-US hourly 1 1574202 A sign of things to come Fri, 04 Feb 2011 21:23:38 +0000 Well, maybe. Maybe not. Regardless, inspiration struck me and it looked so pretty when I finished it that I thought I’d share it.

Whenever I look at it, I hear the song Echelon in my head. So I’d say it’s rather appropriate to call is “Rare Changes”.

Back in business…almost Thu, 02 Sep 2010 19:35:57 +0000 So…you as my readers may have noticed that Petoholics Anonymous disappeared for about a week and is now back, albeit with missing posts and other bits. Hopefully I haven’t lost a lot of readers in that time because they thought I had just disappeared off the face of the earth.

I won’t give you all the long ranty details but I will say that 2 of my domains, including this one, got hacked by some religious extremist who thought it was great to spread their propaganda at the expense of someone who blogs and makes websites simply as a hobby. Great work, guys. From the sounds of it, it wasn’t anything on my end but instead a security backdoor in my webhost’s server. And there were at least 3 other accounts hit by the same group so I wasn’t the only one.

Myst told me about the hacking as I was away on vacation at the time and much more interested in spending time with Kazi than blogging. I in turn notified my webhost about the hacking and they decided to “terminate” the domains accounts that had been hacked. Then followed several days of slow responses from them, where it went from “Just reactivate those accounts and remove the hacker’s code :)” to “You can’t find the accounts? We’ll look into it” to “It’s all gone. Hope you have backups”.

So all the files and databases from my two hacked domains plus, for some reason,  Kazi’s blog (despite the fact that he had never been hacked)…all gone.

See that? That is not my happy face.

I know that the only person to blame for not having a great backup is myself but I mean…really? Did they have to take the lazy route and just delete everything and clean their hands of the issue?

*cough* Anyways, I did say I wasn’t going to rant (I really only did a little).

So, over the next couple of days, I’m going to work on restoring those lost pictures and posts as best I can. All I can say is thank god for search engines that cache websites. All I’m really going to lose is the comments on each post since March.

If you see anything missing or not working that was posted after March 2010, please let me know.

And let my example be a warning to all bloggers: back up your stuff regularly. I know I’m going to be buying a backup tool for just that.

Hear ye, hear ye! Looking for bloggers! Thu, 25 Feb 2010 21:02:34 +0000 There I was, staring at my Google Reader. I was struck with a sudden, blinding flash of inspiration…

“You really need to clean this %*@# up.”

As I was purging old blogs, some of which had not been updated since last summer, I recalled that my blogroll here also needed a similar culling. I’m a lazy person, I’ll admit it. But lazy also means that you get inventive!

Thanks to Mania’s post that I somehow managed to remember, I was able to tie my blogroll to my Reader so I would only have to do one update. Again…lazy, but brilliant IMHO.

After that and the purging had been completed, my Reader looked woefully small and I came to the realization that I have not added a new blog in a while. I scoured some other blogs’ links and added a few here and there. However, I still want more.

So here’s your opportunity for shameless self-promotion (or selflessly promoting your favorite blog, I don’t care). In the comments, I want to see some cool blogs for me to read and link to. My favorite kind of blogs have at least a little bit of a personal touch, not just spewing out fact and theory-crafting. Heck, they don’t even have to be hunter blogs! I’d totally broaden my horizons. So link away, my fine petoholic friends!

No, I’m not being lazy and making everyone else search for me. I swear it’s because I value my reader’s opinions.

Random thought: I’ve been toying with the idea of having another person start posting here as well. Yes, a guest poster or a co-author, something like that. Would that sort of thing be of interest to anyone? What would you post about?

New Design: Now that’s shiny Thu, 06 Aug 2009 04:21:18 +0000 If I might say so myself…that is one beautiful sunset background.

All this design is missing now is the infamous Twitch.

New Design: Just getting started Wed, 05 Aug 2009 21:56:20 +0000 I was going to say “Before anyone panics” but it looks like poor Pookii already did when he visited while I was fooling around with the themes. Petoholics is still named “Petoholics Anonymous”, I just hadn’t had a chance to replace the temporary logo that came with the theme. >.>

And fear not, Twitch and the sunset background will be back as well. I’m going to fiddle around with this new theme until it’s the way I like it. So keep expecting changes every once in a while.

So…how does it look so far?

It’s back! …Kinda! Sun, 12 Jul 2009 17:33:17 +0000 So the old posts and comments have been restored. It took a little finagling with databases and SQL to do but it’s there. 😀

Really the only thing left to go is to make this blog look all pretty again…which will take a bit of time. I was thinking of slowly building up the design over time so you guys could see the changes in the look. Would anyone be interested in seeing that?

At least I’m not the only one Wed, 08 Jul 2009 17:36:35 +0000 The Guild blog got hijacked by those spammers too. The issue seems to be old WordPress files that have been hanging around from previous versions and never got updated because…well, they’re not used any more. So if you have a self-hosted WordPress blog that has been updated from an older version, check your files. Wiping all the WordPress files and starting with a fresh install might be a good idea.

In closing, I only have this to say…bastard spammers.

Scum of the internet Thu, 18 Jun 2009 14:42:07 +0000 So, I’m sure you’re all wondering what has happened to the Petoholics theme and where all the posts and pages disappeared to. The answer is pretty simple and yet surprisingly infuriating…spammers hacked my blog.

Thankfully they didn’t upload any viruses or anything. Instead they seemed content with filling every page with spam links for “that little blue pill” and god knows what else. They even hid it so the only way you could see it is looking at the source code. At first I thought they had only gotten to this blog. Then I realized that they had put their crap on every single PHP file in the domain. Anyone who has visited my old site knows that it had over 200 PHP pages.

How did they do it? Your guess is as good as mine. It could have been anything from backdoors in WordPress or its plugins, some old unsecure script located on one of those 200+ pages that I haven’t touched for years, or even my webhost being comprimised. After a bit of searching, I discovered that other people have had similar problems particularly with hacked WordPress themes. So far I have yet to see one that knows how it was done in the first place. Instead they talk about how to deal with the impact.

Why did they do it? Google “wow name generator”. My PANDA generator is second from the top. I was getting 700-800 hits a day from that position. The spammers decided they wanted to piggyback off my hard work and they somehow found a way to do it. They just wanted to get their stupid spam out there, regardless of who they hurt in the process.

What happens now? I tried at first to just delete their code from my blog, not realizing at the time that they had gotten to all those other pages. I got rid of some out of date plugins, changed my password, basically tried every security trick I could find. I hoped I had succeeded. The next day it was back again and that’s when I discovered it wasn’t just Petoholics Anonymous that had been affected. I figured the best thing to do would be to start anew, wiping the slate clean of their s**t. So I downloaded every file to my computer, backed up every database, and then deleted everything from my server. As for Petoholics, I will work on getting every blog post and page up here again, hopefully all the comments too. I don’t know how long it will take because I want to go over every inch with a fine toothed comb. The last thing I want is a repeat of this nightmare.

The side of me you’re all seeing right now is the practical side, the part that’s dealing with the problem at hand. What you aren’t seeing is the very angry, “I’m going to hunt down and hurt these spammer” side. My guildmates talk about how they know I’m mad when I start swearing. Imagine me using the vilest curses I know in every second breath. The part that hurts the most surprisingly? They defiled the part of my old site that showcases Blacky, my dear black lab that passed away two year ago. And I know they don’t give a rat’s a** about it. That…that demands retribution that I can’t give because the spammers are spineless cowards. All I can do clean up the mess and make things right again.

So if you’re a blogger (which I know a lot of you are), take my situation and learn from it. Be diligent about your blog, check your security on a regular basis and keep things up to date. Please don’t let this happen to you.

The moment hunters have been waiting for… Tue, 12 Aug 2008 06:38:13 +0000 You have all waited very patiently for this, I know you have. So before everyone explodes from being pent-up, I proudly give you…drum roll please…

The Pet-o-licious Namerator!

You may be wondering why only 2 names appear at a time when PANDA has 10 at once. The reason? I have discovered that I’m good at thinking of serious pet names…not so good at silly ones. As a result, the silly categories for every pet name are sorely needing to be filled. Some of them only have 2 names listed in those categories. So I turn to you, my readers, once again to help me by sending in any silly pet names you can think of. Use the form below the Namerator to send them in to me. Remember that pet names can fall under more than one category so I’ve made the form able for you to choose multiple categories if it is appropriate. Once the categories have more names, I will make it so that more names appear when you press the Generate button.

I would also like to credit Fizzwidget, one of my favourite mod authors, for giving me the inspiration behind the name. It may not be as witty or inventive as some of his, but I tried. 🙂

Please feel free to make any comments or suggestions about the Pet-o-licious Namerator on this post. I always welcome everyone’s feedback. 🙂

The results are in Sat, 28 Jun 2008 08:05:10 +0000 Update: The Pet-o-licious Namerator is now here!

The poll to decided how the pet name generator would work has now been closed. I figured 10 days was enough time for everyone to get their opinions in. Thanks to the 257 of you who voted, I have been able to determine that what people want is serious and silly categories for each pet family. So that’s how it’s gonna be! Special thanks to Mania for helping get the word out, and to WOWInsider for also posting about it. I will get working on it next week…after I celebrate Canada Day of course 😉

Here’s the poll results for anyone who’s interested.
