Name Generator – Petoholics Anonymous Because you can never have too many pets Sat, 16 Nov 2013 15:57:05 +0000 en-US hourly 1 1574202 Name generators updated Sat, 12 Feb 2011 19:55:11 +0000 Just wanted to leave a quick note to let everyone know that I finally got around to updating the PANDA WoW Name Generator (which now includes goblin and worgen names) and the Pet-o-licious Namerator (which now includes beetle, dog, fox, monkey, and shale spider names). My apologies for taking so long. You can imagine how daunting going through over 300 emails can be. >.>

Also, I’d like to apologize for the rest downtime to the site. My webhost moved everyone to new servers and for whatever reason, my sites were the only ones who had any problems with the transition. It took over a week just for us to figure out what was wrong, the problem was that obscure. >.< I promise that if anything like that ever happens again, I’m changing hosts. So if anyone ever sees any problems (site is down or loads slowly), please contact me through this form and if that doesn’t work, I’m always available through my Twitter account.

Name generators are getting ready for Cataclysm Thu, 30 Sep 2010 17:56:09 +0000 Obey the kitteh. Otherwise the quest he gives will be to NOM YOU!

Obey the kitteh. Otherwise the quest he gives will be to NOM YOU!

Alert the press!

With Cataclysm looming in the distance and set to arrive in the next couple months (depending on who you ask), I finally got off my lazy butt and fixed up the name suggestion forms for my name generators.

So you can now submit your ideas for worgen and goblin names to the PANDA WoW Name Generator.

Similarly, all of my fellow petoholics can suggest names for the new pet families (dogs, foxes, monkeys) to be added to the Pet-o-licious Namerator.

Visitors who are familiar with the old form will see that it’s changed a bit, simply because it makes it a helluva lot easier for me to add new names this way.

So spread the word and suggest your own names. Or Twitch on the right there will eat you. (You think I’m joking, but can you honestly look at that feral cat expression and say that he doesn’t look like he wants you for a midnight snack?)

The birth of a name Sat, 11 Sep 2010 17:08:16 +0000 Larísa over at the Pink Pigtail Inn wrote about how difficult it can be to come up with a good character name, especially when one has an army of alts. That got me thinking: I have an army of alts that are more or less named differently from one another (as in I don’t have 5 Niqoras running around on 5 different servers). So I thought this might be the perfect opportunity to show some of the ways that I pick out a new name for my character.

There are a couple things to consider when choosing a name. The obvious one is that you can’t choose a name that is already in use on your server. If I’m already on the character creation screen, I try to avoid getting the “That name is not available” spam by inputting my possible names in the WoW Armory. There’s always the chance that some alt under level 10 will have the name and you won’t know it but it can give you an idea of the name’s general popularity.

Then of course you must consider what nickname others will call you by, usually the first three or four letters of your name. For example, I was thinking of using the name “Yakone” for a tauren druid, an Inuit name that means “red aurora”. I then realized that if I chose this name, I’d be known on that character as “Yak” or “Yako”. Not the most delightful nicknames. River-dark pointed out the same issue with a character nicknamed “Rash” and her own paladin whose full name is “Hardlove”.

The last two are ones that I take in for personal consideration; you might think differently. I for one have never put any accented characters into any of my names. Not only does it make it really hard for people trying to type in my name, but I myself would have an awful time figuring out how to type them in. (Yes, I know there are keyboard shortcuts but I never remember them.)

With characters I create these days, I like their names to be relatively or completely unique. If there’s more than say 30 people with the name I want in the Armory, even if none of them are on my server, I will go in search of a different name.

Couple all that criteria with the desire to have a name that is good for roleplaying and suits the character’s personality and you’d think that I’d have a hell of a time naming my characters. But really, I don’t find it too terribly hard. So, onto my naming strategies.

  1. Use a name generator. Niqo’s original name Nicora was given to me directly from the in-game name generator. Zulrea was taken from my own PANDA WoW Name Generator.
  2. Pick a name from a different culture. This one is fairly easy, you just have to find a good site that gives you names. My personal favorites are Behind the Name and Names by Chinaroad. Yes, I know the second one is for pets but who’s to say you can’t use those for your toons? I tend to give my tauren Inuit or Native American names, while for Alliance characters I lean towards Irish and Celtic names. Some examples are Anuniaq, a tauren, and Aithne, a blood elf.
  3. Change a couple of letters around or add some. Often times, just picking a name is not good enough. Just look at the number of Nicoras listed on the Armory. But by changing  the “c” to a “q”, I now have the only Niqora on the Armory. And the name is said the same way too. Similarly, I wanted to reserve the name “Rahela” for my worgen but I found that it was already taken. No problem, I simply added an “h” on the end to end up with “Rahelah”, same pronunciation and I will probably be the only one on the Armory.
  4. Play around with naming conventions. As I’m sure a lot of you know, Saraku is a netherdrake in the form of a blood elf ICly. When choosing his name, I went to the wowwiki entry on the Netherwing dragonflight and found out that most of their names end in “-aku” or “-us”. Figuring out the rest of his name was just a matter of scribbling down some possible combinations and picking one that seemed right.
  5. Make your own template for the Fantasy Name Generator. This generator has both a simple interface that’s just drop-down options and button clicks, or a more advanced interface that, as they say, is “almost limitless in its flexibility”. If you take the time to read the instructions and work out your own template, you could have some unique names to use for your characters. I’ve used it to come up with the name for Niqo’s warp stalker, Grakoth. I wanted something guttural sounding, a name that an orc would growl before spitting on the ground and taking a swig of his mead. So I made up my own template and tweaked it until I had the perfect name for him.
  6. Make something up. Take the first name that pops into your head. When I had got Niqo’s first epic mount, a black war wolf, I was staring at him when I suddenly realized, “His name is Brakk.” Now I can’t think of him by any other name.
  7. Combine two names. I have an orc called Machalor. Her name is a combination of “Macha”, an Irish goddess of war, and “Balor”, the king of the Fomorians.
  8. When in doubt, try reversing it. This one is self-explanatory. My druid Aroqin got named after I realized that “Niqora” backwards was quite a good name. After I realized that I couldn’t name a character “Yakone” without being shamed, I switched it around and my new druid on Earthen Ring is now called “Enokay”.

If one of those methods doesn’t work for you, try a combination of them. Pull up a baby naming website, find a scrap of paper, and write down anything that piques your interest or springs into your mind. Don’t worry if it sounds silly at the beginning. With a little tweaking, it could become the perfect name for your character.

And remember, the next alt that you make on a whim could be your new main in the future. And you don’t want to be always known as “Lolhax” now do you? 😉

Character and pet name generators are still live Thu, 18 Jun 2009 18:25:01 +0000 For those of you who are looking, here are the links for the PANDA WoW name generator and the Pet-o-licious Namerator for hunter pet names.

Twas the night before release… Thu, 13 Nov 2008 04:20:22 +0000 And all through fair Azeroth,
Players were anxiously waiting,
Even the hunter with the moth.

Well, I never claimed to be a spectacular poet or anything. The point being is that I finally added all the new pet families to the Pet-o-licious Namerator, and just in time for the expansion. In a short little while I will be huddled outside in the wonderful Canadian Prairie winter, waiting to grab my own copy and hopefully, oh so hopefully, it will be a Collector’s Edition. Later I’ll have to make more posts about what I’ve been up to in the game. Enjoy the new names and wish me luck!

Updating Pet-o-holics Namerator for WotLK Wed, 15 Oct 2008 21:04:02 +0000 So I’m reinstalling WoW on my laptop (don’t ask >.< ) and while I was staring at the progress bar inch ever so slowly along, I realized that with the new patch, there’s new pet families. Families that aren’t in the Pet-o-holics Namerator! This calls for an update!

I figured it would be best to not only include the Patch 3.0 pets but also the Wrath of the Lich King pets. After all, it’s less than a month away now. I’ve already added those families to the suggestion form on the Namerator’s page. This is where you come in, my fellow Petoholics. I need your name ideas for all these new and wonderful pets that Blizzard has given us. I need at least 10 for each family before I can add them to the Namerator. So please do flood my inbox with your suggestions!

While I’m at it, I want to link you to Big Red Rhino, a hunters blog that specifically covers tenacity pets both on the live realms and in the WotLK beta. Personally I love Grakoth, Niqora’s warp stalker, and I used Ihlos’s review of the tenacity talent tree to help decide where I should put his talent points.

And here’s a quick callout to Snake in the Grass, who listed me in her blogroll as a Pet Master, right under Mania. I don’t know if I’m so much a pet master as a pet fanatic. But I can quit whenever I want…really. >.>

I’m flying! And I’m skilled! Mon, 08 Sep 2008 02:14:58 +0000 Technically Niqora was flying before, but now she’s flying in style! If you check my Twitter account, she got her flying mount way back on August 14…but that’s beside the point. 🙂 From the moment that Niqo got her normal flyer and was trying in vain to keep up with Azjin, I was determined to get the epic as fast as I could. I did SSO dailies almost every day and didn’t spend her gold on anything. I was at 4000g when I had a sudden stroke of luck and an enchanting recipe dropped for me…one that Auctioneer said was worth 1500g! I ended up selling it within 10 minutes for 1000g, which I didn’t mind because I’m not greedy. The buyer, a level 70 decked out in the latest raiding gear, didn’t even blink an eye at the price. So I then had 5000g which went to buy the riding skill, and Azjin lent me the remaining 200g for the mount itself (I paid him back the next day with the money I got from my dailies). Following all of this were gleeful cries of “Wheeeeeeee!” as I spent half an hour flying all over Nagrand. It was expensive but boy was it worth it! I love it and would never give it up! Here are some screenshots I took of my first epic flight trip as well as random ones that I just felt like snapping:

Now, after I bought the epic flyer, the next thing on my mental to-do list was to get all of Niqora’s skills maxed out. Skinning had been maxed out for a looooong time, and fishing and cooking didn’t take that long because I was fishing lots of food for Grakoth and cooking it as well. My first aid I have to say was sorely neglected, having sat at about 145 for the longest time. One night I decided to get it up and spent the evening buying cloth off the AH and flying back and forth to Hammerfall with the doctor guy is, the one that teaches you about 4 different bandages. It wasn’t hard to do but it was a little boring. However, I am glad that I did it, the bandages have come in handy lately I’ve found. The last skill was of course…leatherworking. Just a few hours ago, I finally managed to get it to 375. As a result, I have a lot of Bags of Many Hides and Drums of Battle lying around that I know I won’t get my money back on but I’m glad it’s finally complete. The next thing of my list: getting Niqo the Netherscale Armor set!

P.S. One little update on the Pet-o-holics Namerator: All the names I have received have been added and now 10 random names will appear in the Namerator instead of 2. Thank you all for the wonderful success it’s been and keep those names coming!

I think I’m getting carpal tunnel Thu, 21 Aug 2008 09:37:43 +0000 So the word about the Pet-o-holics Namerator is out thanks to WoW Insider and Mania’s Arcania, which spread to many many other sites. Now, I was expecting some interest in it..but not this much interest! Over 4000 views in one day AND there were over 200 name submissions waiting for me in my mail box! One person even submitted names 38 times! Does everyone have a hunter or something?

However, I wanted to say a big thanks to the hunter community for your love and support of this project. My wrists may be hurting a little from entering all those names (and I’m not even half done) but it really makes me feel good to see that I’m not the only one obsessed with pet names. Some of them are very imaginative and funny. I now have it in my head that I’m going to tame the ugliest scariest beast and name him Sparkles or SimpleSensations, just so I can giggle about it every time I log in. Keep the names rolling in and thank you all again!

An aside: One day people will remember that it’s PetOholics, not PetAholics, and that I am a female, not a male. >.>

The moment hunters have been waiting for… Tue, 12 Aug 2008 06:38:13 +0000 You have all waited very patiently for this, I know you have. So before everyone explodes from being pent-up, I proudly give you…drum roll please…

The Pet-o-licious Namerator!

You may be wondering why only 2 names appear at a time when PANDA has 10 at once. The reason? I have discovered that I’m good at thinking of serious pet names…not so good at silly ones. As a result, the silly categories for every pet name are sorely needing to be filled. Some of them only have 2 names listed in those categories. So I turn to you, my readers, once again to help me by sending in any silly pet names you can think of. Use the form below the Namerator to send them in to me. Remember that pet names can fall under more than one category so I’ve made the form able for you to choose multiple categories if it is appropriate. Once the categories have more names, I will make it so that more names appear when you press the Generate button.

I would also like to credit Fizzwidget, one of my favourite mod authors, for giving me the inspiration behind the name. It may not be as witty or inventive as some of his, but I tried. 🙂

Please feel free to make any comments or suggestions about the Pet-o-licious Namerator on this post. I always welcome everyone’s feedback. 🙂

Quick notes Tue, 05 Aug 2008 13:40:52 +0000 …before I fall sleep at the computer (I swear I was wide awake when I got here).

  1. I decided to try out the Twitter thing for my random WoW thoughts and to let everyone know I’m still breathing. It’s located at the bottom of the left menu. We’ll see how long it lasts 🙂
  2. 140 characters is NOT enough for me to put down my thoughts. Are you listening, Twitter?
  3. If you’ve been following The Troll Hunter, you should know that he is very much alive, just hasn’t gotten around to updating his blog. I know because A) I’ve been playing with him and B) I helped him move his blog and even ported his theme over for him. Maybe if I tell everyone this, it will light a fire under his behind and he’ll get posting.
  4. Big news coming very soon. May or may not include my progress on the pet name generator *shifty eyes*
  5. I get really silly when I’m tired. Like right now…I’m going to admit to talking out loud to my hunters’ pets as I play, doing stuff like promising them their favorite food if they do a good job. Am I the only one?

That is all. Now back to your regular scheduled programming. *plays muzak in the background*
