Loud Noises!

6-Jun-08

Working at a gaming centre has its perks, other than the obvious FREE gaming! My boss received a bunch of free tickets to Video Games Live (first time ever in Winnipeg) so the three staff members (including me of course) went to go see it with him last night. Basically what happens is that a full orchestra plays the music from select video games while a large screen plays clips from the game. It was really nice to see that the music was being played by our very own Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

The games I remember seeing were Metal Gear Solid, Halo, Final Fantasy, Castlevania, Super Mario Bros., Zelda, Sonic the Hedgehog, Tetris, Kingdom Hearts, God of War, a montage of all the classics started with Pong, and of course World of Warcraft. There was also an appearance by the Video Game Pianist Martin Leung.

Overall, I really enjoyed the entire thing. The music was wonderfully done and the clips were great to watch. There was even a full choir (whose name escapes me) that was just amazing at singing. It was like watching the real music being recorded for the games. However, there were a bunch of very loud guys sitting behind us that were PlayStation fanboys, which meant a lot of yelling and cheering when they showed Metal Gear Solid and a lot of booing when they showed Halo. Both my boss and I wanted to turn around and make some snide comments, or at least tell them to shut the heck up. We didn’t though.

I was disappointed in the World of Warcraft section. I did not recognize any of the music that was played and I’m someone who actually listens and enjoys the in-game music. The clips were just cinematics from Warcraft III and WoW, plus a couple from the Wrath of the Lich King trailer. It was all right but it could have been much better.

One thing that my boss and I realized is that we may be geeks but we are not gamer geeks. If they hadn’t told us what most of the titles to the games were, we wouldn’t have recognized them. The performance from Martin Leung was great but we had no clue as to the songs he was playing. Everyone else was cheering at hearing songs they recognized, where as we just looked at each other in confusion. Oh well, I never claimed to be a hardcore gamer 🙂

Stuff and things post

If you check out Tkasha on the Armory, you will see that she is wearing Fine Leather Gloves and Embossed Leather Pants. I mention this because last night Wolfrider said “You didn’t tell them that he changed her pants!” Yes, that is pretty much a direct quote 😉

Did I mention that I’m going to try MM with Tkasha? I know, I will now be shunned by the Beast Master god. Oh, Tkasha has her own page now 🙂

My school will be done at the end of this week and other than looking for a job and working a little, I’ll have a lot of time on my hands. Again my mind goes back to the idea of a pet name generator, since the character name generator is amazingly popular. Any one have any suggestions or requests for it? Should I organize the names by family or something else? Maybe silly names, mythological names, etc. And where the heck will I get the names from? To my knowledge, there is no other program I can use as a template so I’m starting from scratch.

Comments, suggestion, questions will all be appreciated.

I can not be stopped

Yes, I did it again. This is hunter #9, Tkasha the female troll. She was level 10 when I headed out to grab this screenshot but after killing a couple random mobs, she hit level 11. 🙂 Beside her is her pet, DLish the white crab. Whoever gets the name gets a sugar cookie!

There is more to this story than “I had a sudden altitis attack.” It is true that I had been thinking about another hunter who had a crab as a pet (Yes, I’m copying Mania but imitation is the sincerest form of flattery). It all started with a visit to a certain troll.

Khaja had taken a liking to Wolfrider so I figured it would be nice to pay him a visit. I created a little Khaja look-alike on his server and sure enough, he was online. I’d tell you the details of the conversation but we ended up talking for 5 hours so we covered a lot of topics. Considering we started chatting at midnight, I was a little tired when I finally passed out in bed with the sun coming up outside. But honestly, it was worth it because I really enjoyed talking with him. He subtly asked me if I was going to stick around. I knew I wouldn’t keep the new Khaja because it would just be too strange for me to have 2 characters with the same name. In my eyes, my characters’ names are a crucial part of their personality. But the very next day, I created Tkasha and began leveling her. Wolfrider even joined me for a little while and helped me with some quests. He did make some blood elf newbies angry by wiping out all the harpies south of Orgrimmar. Oops! Meh, they respawn fast anyways.
